Stelvio : Italian for mental !!

Wed morning saw the usual breakfast of meat, bread and cake. Nothing like a bit of stodge in the morning.

The ‘plan’ was to ride up and over the Stelvio pass and then make our way down to Bologna to visit the Ferrari and Ducati factories the following day.

The roads were fantastic and a little hairy. More than once, the stodge I mentioned earlier tried to escape.

As we reached the summit, the snow at the roadside got deeper and we were suddenly riding in the clouds. Quite disorientating especially when their is a sheer drop off the edge of the road.

Their were people skiing down the mountain when we got to the top – its not everyday you mix motorbikes with skiers. Our prize at the top was a hotdog which seemed more life a breadroll, pumped full of mustard with a liberal sprinkling of pig lips and eye lids.

What goes up, must come down.

The journey down was just as exciting and just as uncontrolled as the trip up. Momentum and gravity try to tempt you over the edge of the hairpins whilst you dance on and off the brakes trying to keep them cool. The good news was other than Lee having a moment with a VW camper, we made it down, laughing through the tears!

The rest of Wed was fairly straight forward, making our way to Modena for an overnight stop near the Ferrari factory.

The hotel we found was Tifosi heaven. Everyrhing was Ferrari themed and they had a full-on Formula One simulator – more of that later…

We were dropped off at the ‘nicest’ restaurant in town and haf a gorgeous meal after a false start(er). In their defense,  how could they know Lee wouldn’t like an ample scoop of pig fat mixed with garlic !!
